Understanding Legionella: essential information for your safety
Legionella is a naturally occurring bacterium that can become a serious health risk in man-made water systems. This page explains what Legionella is, where it thrives, and the illnesses it can cause. We aim to provide clarity and peace of mind for property owners and managers.

What is Legionella?
Legionella is a genus of naturally occurring bacteria found in freshwater environments. When it enters man-made water systems, it can multiply rapidly. If inhaled in tiny water droplets (mist), it can cause severe, potentially fatal forms of pneumonia like Legionnaires' disease, or a milder flu-like illness called Pontiac fever.

Where is Legionella found?
In nature, Legionella exists harmlessly in low numbers in rivers, lakes, and soil. However, it becomes a health risk when it multiplies in artificial water systems with temperatures between 20°C and 45°C (68°F - 113°F). Common breeding grounds include hot tubs and whirlpools, cooling towers and large air conditioning units, hot water tanks and plumbing systems, and decorative fountains and humidifiers.

Illnesses caused by Legionella
Breathing in contaminated water mist leads to two main conditions: Legionnaires' disease, a serious type of lung infection (pneumonia) with symptoms including high fever, cough, shortness of breath, and headaches; and Pontiac fever, a milder flu-like illness.
Who needs to know about Legionella?
This information is crucial for landlords, schools, commercial buildings, NHS health settings, care homes, and office blocks. If you manage any of these properties, understanding Legionella and ensuring compliance is vital for the health and safety of your occupants.
